RAYMARINE RAYTECH RNS V6.0 SOFTWARE
RAYMARINE RAYTECH RNS V6.0 SOFTWARE

Merrimack, N.H. and Miami International Boat Show, Miami, Fla. – February 16, 2006 – Raymarine, Inc., a world leader in marine electronics, today announced enhancements to its RayTech RNS 6.0 Navigation Software, the powerful PC-based navigation software suite that has received industry acclaim since its debut in 2000.

With this upgrade, RayTech RNS 6.0 can now integrate with Raymarine’s E-Series displays using Raymarine’s SeaTalkhs networking protocol, enabling a simple, single Ethernet connection between the PC and Raymarine’s SeaTalkhs Network switch.  This integration also allows the captain to access and share radar, digital fishfinder, chart and navigation data between the PC and Raymarine’s E-Series displays.  RayTech RNS 6.0 also offers continued support for SeaTalk, hsb2 and NMEA0183 interfaces, allowing connectivity to the widest range of embedded hardware for any PC navigation software available.

In addition, RayTech RNS 6.0 now fully supports Navionics Gold, Hot Maps and the new multi-dimensional Platinum charts on CompactFlash cards.  This software upgrade also includes improved waypoint and route sharing tools, allowing boating enthusiasts to easily plan shore-side and then transfer data onboard for full integration with Raymarine chartplotters and displays.  RayTech RNS 6.0 also comes equipped with a new HD Digital™ fishfinding playback feature, allowing fishermen to “rewind” the fishfinder display, and provides USB video camera support.

“With these upgrades to RayTech RNS 6.0, we’re able to equip our customers with a comprehensive set of navigation software tools for top-of-the-line PC navigation,” said Terry Carlson, president of Raymarine. “Now boaters can integrate technologies from the land and sea to share information for easy planning and execution of marine excursions.”

For Raymarine hardware owners, planning on a home PC has never been easier.  RayTech Planner allows consumers to use the PC to plan at home and then bring only a Compact Flash card to the boat with planned waypoints and routes.  RayTech Planner software is available as a free download from Raymarine's website.  While no additional cost is required if you already have raster cartography, an additional chart reader purchase is necessary to view Navionics cartography.

Additional features of RayTech RNS 6.0 include:

Customizable User Interface: Organize navigation data into easy-to-use “pages”

  • Animated Weather Forecasts: Download weather forecasts from Raymarine.com for intelligent navigation
  • Satellite Fishing Maps: Overlay sea surface temperature and plankton concentration data on the electronic chart
  • Navigation and Tactical Sailing Tools: Monitor wind, laylines, other boats and weather to make smart decisions on the race course
  • DataTrak Time-Based Graphs: Monitor instrument data trends to compare instruments and vessel performance
  • Polar Data Collection and Analysis: Identify optimum speed and heading for various sailing conditions
  • Route Optimization: Identify ideal route based on ocean current, wind speed and direction, along with a particular sailboat’s polar characteristics

GPS tracking devices have finally reached the mass markets, enabling everyone from parents to law enforcement agencies to track the movements of vehicles, people or animals. Prices are down considerably (<$300) and monthly service plans have becomes more reasonable, starting at $20-$25/month. Three of my favorite models are made by Covert Track at GPS Intel www.gpsintel.com. These models include the CT-100, CT-200 and Trim Trac Pro.

The CT-100 is small and runs off a 9-day internal battery that would have to be recharged at some point. When a request is made to locate, it attempts to find satellites. But if this is unsuccessful, the device will triangulate off Sprint cell towers and still send the location to the reporting website (part of your subscription fees). This enables the device to be tracked inside a vehicle, in a garage or a building.

The CT-200 does not offer cell tower triangulation but has an enhanced satellite tracking system that has a much better uptime than traditional gps devices. As part of the Worldwide Reference Network, the satellite data is collected 7 days in advance so that the satellite data is readily available to locate the receiver on demand. This enables the tracker CT-200 to be found even indoors. The internal battery should last up to 10 days.

The Trim Trac Pro is the only model that allows you to attach an external gps antenna for even better tracking. This enables you to hide the tracking device in a more hidden location while running the antenna to a better view of the sky. It operates on 4 AA batteries which can be monitored remotely but will remain dormant when the vehicle is not in motion. Location can be polled on a website or via cell phone. You can view street and aerial overlay of location via the website, get address and monitor speed. Trim Trac Pro is a little larger than the other 2 units.
